Saving Millions

Lynden Tennison, Union Pacific Chief Information Officer, implemented Innovation Station to spur innovation in a 150-year-old Fortune 200 railroad. Information Technology employees post their innovative ideas anonymously for peer evaluation. If their idea gets 80% 'up' votes they get $3,000 and 120 hours of work time to create a prototype. They also get an 'idea coach', who is a randomly assigned executive of Union Pacific to assist with idea validation. The innovative employee then presents their idea and prototype to senior leaders who help move the idea to full implementation. The $10 million Tennison estimates in annual benefit from Innovation Station comes mostly from one idea, which fixed an error in a rail wayside tracking system that was causing trains to needlessly stop.
